NINETEEN MINUTES
In nineteen minutes you can see something you never thought. Witness something you will never forget. Be involved during a school shoot out. In the nineteen minutes by Jodi Picoult the main character Josie is going through a tough time being discouraged by her peers. What has happened so far was that we are discussing the begging of the day where the shoot out occurred. Josie went to get coffe at the kitchen with her mother over the counter. She calls her mother by her first name for some odd reason. I don't know maybe this will be a good book after all.
IF YOU COme SOFTLY
In the book If You Come Softly by Jacquline Woodsen the two main characters are being discouraged because of their love for each other, when being of different colors. Ellie and Miah (Jerimiah) are a couple when everyday gets a dirty look for being together in public. For example, when Ellie and Miah were walking through Central Park this old white lady asked Ellie if she was alright and needed help. She did this because Ellie was holding hands with Miah who is black. So she assumed he was hurting her of some sort. Another example was when Ellie told her sister about Miah and she completely freaked out an told Ellie it wasn't a good idea to be with some one like Miah. Ellie thought that Anne would understand because she is gay. So she knows what it feels to be different. I guess not.

Jerk
Being teased is so not fair. Many do it because your different or you have a problem. Jerk by Jonathan Frisen is about a boy named Sam who has tourette syndrome and is being discouraged because of it. Many think Sam Carrier is a freak because he twitches every minute. He is being discouraged by his step father ever since they found out when he was little. Sam thinks that Bill is ashamed of him because of his disability. But his mother loves him regardless. Another one is he has to go to this therapy session everyday after school to talk about his tourette. Sam loves to run but because the Coach said he can't on the track team, he can't. The reason being he can go in to spasm at any moment. Which I think is unfair.

Charles VS Laurie
" The day my son Laurie started kindergarten, he gave up his little-boy clothes. He started wearing blue jeans, with a belt. He looked as though he were going off to a fight". This isn't something a typical parent would say. In this story Charles by Shirley Jackson, Laurie comes home everyday and has different stories about this other kid named Charles who is really bad and reckless. As the reader why is Charles so important?
There was many different themes from child vs child, mother vs father, teacher vs student, to mother vs son. But the most important was Mother Vs Child because Laurie's Mother is starting to get worried that "Charles" is a bad influence. " Do you think kindergarten is to disturbing for Laurie?"I asked him. " This Charles boy sounds like a bad influence." This shows that the mother was well aware that Charles was beginning to be a little bit to much trouble.
The plot is easy to realize in this story because you know from the dialogue. In the start Laurie is going off to school for his first day if kindergarten. Then rising action started to occur when Laurie came home with his first Charles story. " But the teacher spanked a boy," Laurie said. " For being fresh." Laurie thought. " It was Charles," he said." The teacher spanked him and mad him stand in the corner." There was a little hinting when Laurie had to think, why think about it if you knew everything? Then came the ultimate turning point were the mother found out there was Charles just Laurie. " I looked over the faces of all the other mothers. None of them looked unhappy enough to be the mother of Charles. No one stood up and apologized for the way her son had been acting. No one mentioned Charles". Shouldn't that tell you something? Now this is the falling action: " I'm Laurie mother." " Oh yes," she said. "We're all so interested in Laurie."
"He certainly likes kindergarten" I said. " He talks about it all the time."
" He's has some trouble getting used to the school," she said. " Suppose his trouble might be from Charles' influence."
" Charles?" she said. " We don't have any Charles in kindergarten."
Anything is possible when your a little kid. But I didn't know that you could make a new identity to hide your faults was one of them. My reaction was that I was shocked that this little boy who is know less than three or four could come up with such a brilliant plan to hide his troubles. I think this is one of the best stories ever because you get problem after problem in the story which is just the rising action of the story. Till you get to the climax or the turning point where Laurie's mother realizes that Charles never existed. But I don't get why, why the fake person. I mean after all Charles doesn't exits.

Stop the Sun
Vietnam Syndrome is what most soldiers after war. Their body is present but their minds is still at war time. Terry's father has Vietnam Syndrome and sometimes when sitting at the dinner table his eyes wonders off more and more. In Stop the Sun by Gary Paulsen, Terry faces a problem were the only solution is for his for his father to talk about the war. Which is a pretty huge risk. As the reader, Terry to do that may bring a lot of change to the relationship he has with his father.
The Problem or conflict in the story is that Terry wants his father to open up about Vietnam so he can "understand" it better. Which is true but he wants to know because his father did something that really embarrassed him. " His father was squirming along the floor on his stomach. He was crying, looking terrified, his breath coming in short, hot pants like some kind of hurt animal." This was the main reason why Terry was so interested. He became so embarrassed that he crossed the street when his father was walking toward him. But I don't understand why not ask him instead of doing all that research. The rising action in the story was when Terry went in to the Kitchen and asked his father about Vietnam. Which in the end made Terry feel so horrible about it. " No. Not that. It was a standing joke between them. When his father got around to explaining it to him they had already covered it in school. " It's something else,' 'Something pretty heavy judging by your face.' 'Yes' 'Well?' I still can't do it, Terry thought. Things are bad, but maybe not as bad as it could get. I still can't drop this thing. 'Vietnam' Terry blurted out. ,'No! his father said sharply . 'No that's another part of my life. A bad part. A rotten part. It has nothing to do with this family. No'
The turning point was when Terry realized that his father was about to break his silence about Vietnam. An how making him talk was all for the wrong reasons. "We were crossing a rice paddy in the dark.' he said, and suddenly his voice flowed like a river breaking loose.'
